Organizing with Groups & Collections#

Icophony uses a two-level hierarchy to keep your library structured: Groups contain Collections, and Collections contain Icons.

Collections#

A Collection is a named set of icons — think of it like a folder for icons. Every icon belongs to at most one collection (icons without a collection appear in the Unfiled smart folder).

Creating a Collection#

Right-click anywhere in the sidebar and choose New Collection, or use the toolbar button at the bottom of the sidebar.

Collection Inspector#

Click a collection name in the sidebar to select it. The inspector panel shows:

  • Name — Editable. Changes are saved automatically.
  • Notes — Free-form text for any context you want to remember about this set.
  • URL — Link to the original source, icon set page, or wherever the icons came from. Click the arrow icon to open it in your browser.
  • License — Assign a shared license to the whole collection (see License Manager). Use Apply to All Icons to push the collection’s license down to every icon it contains.
  • Info — Shows the icon count and creation date.

Renaming Collections#

Click the collection in the sidebar to open its inspector, then edit the Name field directly.

Reordering Collections#

Drag collections in the sidebar to reorder them within a group.

Groups#

A Group is a folder that holds collections and other groups. Groups can be nested arbitrarily — there’s no depth limit.

Creating a Group#

Right-click in the sidebar and choose New Group.

Group Inspector#

Selecting a group in the sidebar shows:

  • Name — Editable.
  • Info — Sub-group count, direct collection count, and total icon count (including all nested content).

Nesting Groups#

Drag a group onto another group to make it a child. The sidebar shows nested groups as disclosure trees — click the triangle to expand or collapse.

Reordering Groups#

Drag groups in the sidebar to change their order. A line indicator shows where the item will land.

Smart Folders#

Three read-only folders always appear at the top of the sidebar:

Smart FolderContents
All IconsEvery icon in your library
FavoritesIcons you’ve starred (☆)
UnfiledIcons not assigned to any collection

These update in real time as you add, remove, or move icons.

Moving Icons Between Collections#

Drag icons from the grid onto a collection name in the sidebar. A highlight on the collection row indicates it will receive the icons.

You can also drag icons between the grid and the sidebar to file or re-file them.
