Getting Started#

Icophony is a three-column app: the sidebar on the left organizes your library, the icon grid in the middle shows your icons, and the inspector panel on the right shows details for whatever you’ve selected.

Importing Your First Icons#

Drag and Drop Files#

Drag any supported image files directly onto the icon grid. Icophony accepts SVG, PNG, GIF, PDF, ICNS, WebP, ICO, and JPEG files.

Choose File → Import… (or press ⌘⇧I) to open a file picker. Select one or more icon files — or an entire .iconjar bundle — and Icophony imports them all at once.

Organizing with Groups & Collections#

Icophony uses a two-level hierarchy to keep your library structured: Groups contain Collections, and Collections contain Icons.

Collections#

A Collection is a named set of icons — think of it like a folder for icons. Every icon belongs to at most one collection (icons without a collection appear in the Unfiled smart folder).

Creating a Collection#

Right-click anywhere in the sidebar and choose New Collection, or use the toolbar button at the bottom of the sidebar.

Navigating the Grid#

Click any item in the sidebar to load its icons into the grid:

All Icons — your full library
Favorites — starred icons only
Unfiled — icons not in any collection
SVG Types — SVG icons filtered by Centerline, Filled, or Outline
Any Collection — icons in that collection
Any Group — icons across all collections in that group (including nested groups)

The grid uses a responsive tile layout. Icons are displayed as thumbnails with their name below. Resize the window to fit more or fewer columns.

Click any icon in the grid to open it in the inspector panel on the right side of the window.

Preview#

The top of the inspector shows a large preview of the icon rendered at a larger size. For SVG icons, the preview reflects any active SVG overrides in real time.

The preview area has a checkerboard background to make transparent areas visible.

Resizing the Preview#

Drag the divider below the preview up or down to give the preview more or less vertical space. The height is remembered between sessions.

SVG Overrides#

SVG overrides let you change the visual appearance of any SVG icon — stroke width, stroke color, and fill color — without modifying the original file. Overrides are applied in real time in the preview and are included when you drag or export the icon.

Accessing Overrides#

Select any SVG icon. The SVG Overrides section appears at the top of the inspector panel, above the other metadata fields.

Importing Icons#

From Files#

Choose File → Import… (⌘⇧I) or drag files directly onto the icon grid.

Supported file types: SVG, PNG, GIF, PDF, ICNS, WebP, ICO, JPEG.

You can import multiple files at once. If a collection is currently selected in the sidebar, imported icons are added directly to it. Otherwise, they land in Unfiled.

From IconJar#

Drag an .iconjar bundle onto the grid, or choose File → Import… and select the bundle.

License Manager

License Manager#

The License Manager lets you create reusable license records and attach them to icons and collections, so you always know what attribution a given icon requires.

Opening the License Manager#

Choose File → License Manager from the menu bar.

Creating a License#

Click the + button in the License Manager toolbar.
A new “New License” entry appears in the list and is selected automatically.
Fill in the fields in the editor on the right:

Field	Description
Name	Short identifier, e.g. “MIT”, “CC BY 4.0”, “Custom Commercial”
URL	Link to the full license text. Click the arrow to open in browser.
Description	Any notes — attribution requirements, restrictions, contact info, etc.

Changes save automatically.

Font Manager

Font Manager#

The Font Manager tracks icon fonts that were part of imported IconJar bundles. Some icon sets are distributed as a font file alongside SVG or PNG assets — Icophony preserves that font data so you can access it later.

Opening the Font Manager#

Choose File → Font Manager from the menu bar.

Viewing Fonts#

The left column lists all imported icon fonts, sorted by name. Each entry shows:

Drag & Drop#

Drag and drop is central to how Icophony works — both for getting icons in and out, and for organizing your library.

Dragging Icons Out#

Drag any icon to use it in another app:

From the icon grid — drag a thumbnail.
From the inspector preview — drag the large preview image.

Drop destinations:

Destination	Result
Finder	Creates an icon file at the drop location
Xcode	Adds the icon to the asset catalog or project
Figma / Sketch / Affinity	Inserts as an image layer
Any file-accepting app	Delivers the icon as a file

SVG Overrides on Drag#

When you drag an SVG icon, any active SVG overrides (stroke width, stroke color, fill color) are baked into the dragged file. The receiving app gets a fully self-contained SVG — no dependency on Icophony’s override settings.

Open Settings with ⌘, or via the Icophony menu.

General#

Hide Window While Dragging#

When enabled, the Icophony window hides automatically as soon as you drag an icon outside of it. The window reappears when the drag ends.

Useful when dragging icons into apps that sit behind Icophony — the destination app becomes fully visible the moment the drag starts.

Window Always on Top#

When enabled, the Icophony window floats above all other windows, even when another app is in focus.
