Icon Detail & Metadata#

Click any icon in the grid to open it in the inspector panel on the right side of the window.

Preview#

The top of the inspector shows a large preview of the icon rendered at a larger size. For SVG icons, the preview reflects any active SVG overrides in real time.

The preview area has a checkerboard background to make transparent areas visible.

Resizing the Preview#

Drag the divider below the preview up or down to give the preview more or less vertical space. The height is remembered between sessions.

Favorites#

Click the star (☆) in the top-right corner of the preview to toggle the icon’s favorite status. Favorited icons appear in the Favorites smart folder.

Dragging Out#

Drag the preview image directly to any other app (Xcode, Figma, Sketch, Finder, etc.) to export the icon. SVG icons dragged out include any active overrides baked in.

Metadata Fields#

Name#

The icon’s display name, shown below its thumbnail in the grid. Edit it directly in the Name field. Changes save automatically.

Tags#

Tags let you add arbitrary labels to icons for filtering and organization. Tags are comma-separated and stored per icon.

  • Add a tag: Type in the tag field and press Return or comma.
  • Remove a tag: Click the × on any tag chip.

Notes#

A free-form text area for any context you want to record — where you got the icon, what it’s used for, version notes, etc.

URL#

A link to the icon’s source — the icon set’s website, the designer’s portfolio, etc. Click the arrow icon next to the field to open the URL in your browser.

Attributes#

Invert based on Dark Mode#

Enable Invert based on Dark Mode when an icon needs automatic color inversion for better contrast as macOS switches between light and dark appearance. This only affects the way the icon looks in Icophony’s icon grid. The icon itself remains unchanged when exported (unless you have applied SVG overrides and export the icon from the right side inspector.)

Icophony analyzes imported icons and sets this when it detects mostly monochrome artwork that benefits from inversion. You can turn it on or off per icon at any time.

SVG Type#

For SVG icons, SVG Type classifies the structure of the SVG:

TypeUse
UnknownNo type assigned
CenterlineStroke-based line artwork
FilledSolid filled artwork
OutlineOutline artwork built from filled shapes

Icophony detects SVG Type during import. You can change it manually, and the value is used by the SVG Types filters in the sidebar.

When multiple icons are selected, shared attribute controls let you update Invert based on Dark Mode for the whole selection. If the selection includes SVG icons, you can also set their shared SVG Type.

Image Attributes#

Displays read-only technical metadata:

FormatSVG, PNG, GIF, etc.
DimensionsWidth × Height in pixels
File SizeStored data size

License#

Assign a license record to the icon (see License Manager). The license picker shows all licenses in your library. Select None to clear it.

Multiple Selection#

When more than one icon is selected, the inspector shows a summary view instead of individual fields. Drag, favorite, or delete operations apply to all selected icons at once.
