Drag & Drop#
Drag and drop is central to how Icophony works — both for getting icons in and out, and for organizing your library.
Dragging Icons Out#
Drag any icon to use it in another app:
- From the icon grid — drag a thumbnail.
- From the inspector preview — drag the large preview image.
Drop destinations:
| Destination | Result |
|---|---|
| Finder | Creates an icon file at the drop location |
| Xcode | Adds the icon to the asset catalog or project |
| Figma / Sketch / Affinity | Inserts as an image layer |
| Any file-accepting app | Delivers the icon as a file |
SVG Overrides on Drag#
When you drag an SVG icon, any active SVG overrides (stroke width, stroke color, fill color) are baked into the dragged file. The receiving app gets a fully self-contained SVG — no dependency on Icophony’s override settings.
Dragging Icons In#
Drop icon files onto the icon grid to import them. Supported types: SVG, PNG, GIF, PDF, ICNS, WebP, ICO, JPEG, and .iconjar bundles.
If a collection is selected in the sidebar, dropped icons are added to that collection.
Reordering in the Sidebar#
Drag groups and collections within the sidebar to reorder them:
- Reorder within a group: Drag an item up or down. A line indicator shows where it will land.
- Move into a group: Drag a collection or group onto a group row. The group highlights when it will receive the item.
- Move to the top level: Drag a collection out of a group and above all groups.
A small circle-and-line insertion indicator appears between items to show the exact drop position.
Reordering Icons in the Grid#
Drag icon thumbnails within the grid to reorder them inside a collection. The new order is saved automatically.
Reordering is only available within a single collection view. Smart folders (All Icons, Favorites, Unfiled) and group views do not support reordering.
Multiple Icon Drag#
Select multiple icons (⌘ or ⇧ + click), then drag any one of them. All selected icons are carried together in the drag.
Settings#
Hide Window While Dragging — when enabled in Settings, the Icophony window hides automatically as soon as you drag an icon outside of it. The window reappears when the drag ends. Useful when the drop target is behind the Icophony window.
